ASA bans William Hill’s online bingo ad!

The reason? The ad was ’socially irresponsible’ — what the?? Here’s what William Hill’s commercial shows: a woman waiting eagerly for her husband to leave the house in the morning so she can sneak off to play online bingo. She is so keen to get online that she turns forward the hands of the clock to make him leave the house sooner. LOL! Is that being socially irresponsible?? I think it’s funny! =)

Unfortunately, several complaints were made about the ad, stating that the character was obviously addicted to online gambling and was deceiving her partner about her bingo activities. Gambling adverts in UK must stick to strict guidelines in which the gambling activity must not appeal to children or be seen to improve one’s life or status.

William Hill countered that their ad was merely a humorous look at a common situation, where a housewife can’t wait for her husband to go to work, so she can get on with her day. However the ASA claimed that the ad promotes gambling in a socially irresponsible way that could lead to emotional or financial harm. The slogan, “I get mine the minute he’s left” implied a rather desperate urge to gamble.

London’s Tube bans liquor onboard

But the day before the ban was enforced, a drinking spree ensued in the Tube! And you thought Londoners are uptight?? Think again! Hehe! =) According to reports, police were kept busy as people using London’s Tube took advantage of the last night that drinking alcohol was allowed in the underground train network. Revellers held rowdy parties inside train carriages late Saturday in a city that has gained a reputation for reckless binge drinking — and now the new mayor’s attempts to curb public rowdiness. Police responded to reports of vandalism by closing six stations and arresting 17 people.

Six assaults were reported on staff members and police said intoxicated revellers damaged several trains. YIKES! Many partygoers wore elaborate costumes, including some men who dressed up as beer bottles to enjoy a final drink before the ban went into effect at midnight on all of London’s public transit systems. At Monument station, a group of men wore platinum-blond wigs and business suits as they dressed up as Mayor Boris Johnson, who vowed during his election campaign to tackle anti-social behaviour. You go Mayor! =)

soup banned for being too fresh!

What the?? And as you might have guessed, this stupid banning happened in UK again. Sheesh! According to reports, school entrepreneurs who won a competition with their home-made soup have been told to hand back their prize – because their ingredients were “too fresh”! In the latest example of health and safety madness, pupils of Penwortham Priory Sports and Technology College in Preston, Lancs, were disqualified because their dish did not have a three-month shelf life.

Goodness! I really don’t get it! The judges would rather have a food full of bad preservatives just that it will have a long shelf-life?? o_O The students were also accused of breaking rules by growing their herbs, using organic veg and touching the ingredients. The school’s head teacher Jim Hourigan is refusing to hand back the trophies after winning the final. He described the ruling by organisers Young Enterprise UK as “absurd”. SO RIGHT!

teens banned from Apple stores!

The reason? Apple store employees caught them downloading a third-party application onto a demo iPhone! Really unthinkable so they got immediate banishment from Apple stores “for life” o_O Read on below for the story (thanks to wired.com) —

Two Palo Alto High School students — Daniel Fukuba and Eric Vicenti — met up with two recent Paly grads, Noah Rogers and Anjay Patel, at the Apple Store in downtown Palo Alto. While the teens waited for Patel to show up at the store, they downloaded the third-party car-racing game “Raging Thunder” onto the store’s iPhone. The store manager asked them if they needed help, to which they responded that they were doing fine.

After Patel showed up, the group hung out for “less than five minutes” before they left. But they didn’t get far — they were chased down the block by the manager who told them to “Stop right there.” The Apple store manager called the cops, Daniel’s and Eric’s parents, and the four teens were detained for 2.5 hours. “After being lectured by the manager on the dangers of ‘hacking’ into the phones, the teens were photographed and told their pictures were being sent to all Apple stores so they’d be on the lookout for us,” Rogers told the Palo Alto Daily News.

An Apple spokesperson, however, denied banning the teens. “They were not banned from the Apple store,” said spokesman Steve Dowling. So why were the guys under the impression they were banned? “I don’t know, you’ll have to ask them,” he said. So who’s telling the truth now?? But it sure sucks to be banned from Apple stores for life! *shudder*

group wants wifi banned

The reason? They’re ALLERGIC to it!! Yeah, I find it weird too! But the group is adamant! According to reports, the group is located in Santa Fe and they saysthe city is discriminating against them because they say that they’re allergic to the wireless Internet signal. And now they want Wi-Fi banned from public buildings.

Arthur Firstenberg says he is highly sensitive to certain types of electric fields, including wireless Internet and cell phones. “I get chest pain and it doesn’t go away right away,” he said. Firstenberg and dozens of other electro-sensitive people in Santa Fe claim that putting up Wi-Fi in public places is a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The city attorney is now checking to see if putting up Wi-Fi could be considered discrimination. But City Councilor Ron Trujillo says the areas are already saturated with wireless Internet. “It’s not 1692, it’s 2008. Santa Fe needs to embrace this technology, it’s not going away,” Trujillo said. The city attorney hopes to have a legal recommendation by the end of the month.

man banned from uploading to YouTube!

And of course, as expected, this man is from Great Britain / England / UK. For some reason, the government there is exercising too much of their censoring arm! Thank god I don’t live there! Anyway, the banned man apparently posted more than 80 videos of himself and others allegedly committing crimes on Google’s YouTube video-sharing website. Thus, he has been banned from uploading any more clips or images of himself. And if he breaches the banning terms, he may face an immediate jail sentence. TSK!

Speeding, taking drugs, setting off fireworks in a wheelie bin and refusing to pay a taxi fare were among the offenses that Andrew Kellett is alleged to have committed in clips posted on the site. In response to his antics, Leeds Magistrates’ Court issued him with an Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO) that prevents him posting any more videos or images of his activities. Kellet, who was called “Leeds’ dumbest criminal” by a Leeds Councillor, claimed the ban restricted his freedom of speech and that he was simply an innocent bystander recording events.
