India bans historical film!

Jodha Akbar, a film based on a legendary romance between a Muslim Moghul emperor and a Hindu princess from Rajasthan, was banned in India’s central Madhya Pradesh state yesterday (Friday) after protests by the Rajput community. The protesters claim the film distorts historical facts. They say it is an insult to portray Rajput princess Jodha as Akbar’s wife when she was his daughter-in-law.

The film tells the story of how Akbar married Jodha in an effort to win the allegiance of the Rajput chieftains who held sway over the north-western Rajasthan region, in his effort to extend the Mughal empire to Afghanistan. The film’s director Ashutosh Gowarikar said in a recent interview that he chose to tell the story of how the proud Rajput princess refused to be a mere political pawn and how a marriage of convenience turned into true love. The film is also an exploration of a cross-cultural marriage, he said.

“What I found attractive in this story was how two cultures and religions – the Rajputs and the Mughals – came together 450 years ago. I thought it fascinating to explore how the two resolved cultural differences and shared a perfect arranged marriage,” the director said. Dismissing the protests he said: “History gets rewritten every 50 years.” The director also said the film was 30 per cent fact from history books and 70 per cent love and romance from his imagination.

The film features top Bollywood actors Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan in the lead roles, and is estimated to have cost its producers UTV about 10 million dollars. It is said to be one of Bollywood’s biggest releases, opening at 1,500 screens in 26 countries, according to the producers. It has been dubbed in three Indian languages and subtitled in English, Dutch and Arabic. The three-and-a-half hour film has received mixed reviews in India.

RAMBO 4 banned in Myanmar!

Police in military-run Myanmar have banned DVD vendors from selling the new “Rambo” film about a Vietnam war veteran fighting the junta’s soldiers, but that hasn’t stopped people from trying to buy it. “Many customers keep asking about ‘Rambo 4′ but I dare not to sell it. Police have warned me I could go to jail for up to seven years if I sell the latest Rambo film,” said one vendor, who declined to be named. Another seller said at least 20 customers asked him each day whether he had a copy of Rambo. “I don’t even know what kind of movie it is. I too want to see it but even among sellers it is very difficult to get copies,” he said.

Starring Sylvester Stallone, the blood-splattering follow-up to the classic 1980s film trilogy sees war veteran John Rambo fighting Myanmar forces to rescue captured Christian missionaries helping ethnic Karen villagers. The film, which portrays Myanmar’s military as sadistic and depraved, opened recently in the United States and Singapore against a backdrop of the junta’s ongoing persecution of Karen minorities.

YouTube banned again!!

youtubebanned.jpgSome countries are really strict about upholding their culture and revered persons. Turkey is one of them, and the country just banned YouTube because of its videos that allegedly insult Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Founder and First President of the Republic of Turkey. Under Turkish law, it is illegal to insult the honorable Ataturk, despite him being dead for 70 years already! Talk about being overzealous, LOL! Anyway, this is the second time that YouTube got banned in Turkey. The first time was last March 2007 for the same reasons. Thankfully, the ban was lifted two days later when the offending videos were removed. This time, the disrespectful video was apparently about comparing Ataturk with a monkey. Those trying to access YouTube in Turkey will see a notice saying: “Access to this website has been suspended in accordance with decision no: 2008/55 of T R Ankara 12th Criminal Court of Peace.” Other countries that banned YouTube include Thailand and Morocco.

Banned In US schools: Baggy Pants & Desserts??

What the?? I was kinda shocked that elementary schools in Greenich, Connecticut are banning desserts from their cafeteria while in Miami, there’s a ban for wearing baggy/droopy pants in public schools and soon, in public spaces! Is this too much restriction on personal freedom?? I mean who cares about what you eat and what you wear right? So long as you don’t hurt others, US should be a “Live and let live” country. Watch the videos and see what the poor kids have to say about the ban!

STRANGLEHOLD ad banned by ASA!

First, ASA is the Advertising Standards Authority in the Great Britain. Second, Strangehold is that uber fantastic John Woo shooter game! If you haven’t heard of it, man, get a life! LOL! I would have posted the banned TV ad here, but lo! It disappeared in YouTube! The ad wasn’t in other video-sharing sites too. Guess it was TOTALLY BANNED! Hehe! If you happen to stumble on it, give us a heads up okay?? =) For now, be contented with this one sort of violent screen cap, hehe! The ad was previously cleared for broadcast past 7:30pm in UK but it was banned after 2 viewers complained. Read on below!
stranglehold1.jpg

The Stranglehold TV ad showed a prolonged shoot-out between four men. Voice-over stated “Honour is his code. Vengeance is his mission. Violence is his only option. John Woo presents Stranglehold. The next generation of action gaming has arrived”. On-screen text during the shoot-out stated “Not actual game footage.” More on-screen text at the end of the ad stated “JOHN WOO PRESENTS STRANGLEHOLD” alongside the logo for an “18″ rating.
ISSUES:
1. One viewer believed the ad glorified violence and gun crime and that it was a dangerous incitement to susceptible people.
2. The second viewer, whose three-year-old son had seen the ad, challenged whether it was acceptable for transmission before 9 pm, when young children were likely to see it.
